  32. There is another explanation for the fact: if the data already is
  33. compressed, V.42bis cannot compress it any further. The protocol
  34. is intelligent enough to realize that the data is compressed, and
  35. not to try it any longer, but there still is an overhead: the
  36. internal V.42bis data structures are still updated, and the
  37. current escape character is quoted in the data stream.

  39. Turn V.42bis off if the data is already compressed.
